The novel entitled "The Return of the Native" by Thomas Hardy was always perceived ambivalently, as the plot itself is to great extent paradoxical. First and foremost, "The Return to the Native" is a novel about human desire to escape or break free, in which the person uses any available methods. Eustacia is a 19-year-old sensual beauty, who has only one dream: to be strongly loved by a worthy man, who would take her way from this desolate Egdon Heath settle down somewhere in exotic lands. Seeking to leave the heath, she even accepts the proposition of the person, for whom she has no feelings, rejecting thus her true love. Finally, she flees with her first lover, Wildeve, but the couple sinks in the swamp on their way to freedom.

Major theses.
1) The heath as a background of all plot elements is the most influential character and the determinant of the most significant events in the novel.
2) The aspiration to break free from the heath can be compared to the protest against society, both aspects are apparent in Eustacia's character.
3) The major lines of relationship in the plot are Eustacia - Clym and Wildeve -Thomasin.

Primary issues to discuss.
1) Compare the character of Eustacia to the images of Greek goddesses. Can, in this sense, the heath be compared to the Tartar?
2) How can you describe the opposition between Eustacia and Thomasin?
3) Why exactly does Wildeve refuse to marry Euastacia?
4) Discuss the meaning of the novel in the Victorian context.

Suggested readings.
1) Alcorn, J. The Nature Novel from Hardy to Lawrence. MY: Columbia University Press, 1977.
2) Carpenter, R. Thomas Hardy. New York: Twayne, 1964.
3) Hardy, T. The Return to the Native. , 2000.
