Purchasing a car would be a sound solution only in case you need to travel for long distances every day. In other cases walking, biking or using public transport could be a better alternative as owning a car presupposes enormous expenses for your budget combined with increased responsibility. In some cases, taking an occasional taxi would be less expensive than owning a car. Typical charge for taxi is around $1-$2 per mile. It is customary to leave 10-15% tips to the taxi driver.
Bicycle is an economic means of transportation for students. It is reasonable to buy a mountain bike if the roads are not good or if you plan to drive off-road. Do not however buy too expensive a bike as bicycle theft is very common.
Public transportation is represented by buses and subway. Public transportation is rather reliable and normally arrives within time frame indicated in the schedule.
In case you need to travel from state to state, it is possible to use an airplane, interstate bus or train. Trains and buses are much cheaper, but take more time.
