American films and television tend to exaggerate, thus creating stereotypes of "typical Americans" around the world. People believe Americans to be more boisterous than other nations, but in fact many Americans are quiet and polite. Another typical stereotype is that Americans are very much informal, e.g. they always wear casual clothes or great their teachers by first name. This is true for many Americans, however being polite and wearing more formal clothes would be a plus for you. Besides, there are occasions and environments where formality is unquestionable. One cannot wear jeans and a T-shirt to a job interview and some businesses/schools require their employers/students to wear uniform. Formal clothing is required at weddings, funerals or any other occasions with religious implication. To sum up, you should get rid of all stereotypes not to get into awkward situation or embarrass your American acquaintances.
