It is polite to place a call before you visit someone, even if you were invited to drop in by anytime. You should not stay for too long as otherwise you risk to become an annoying guest. Social gatherings often take place on short notice. In case you are unexpectedly invited for a social gathering, try to accept the invitation. Don't be afraid to decline the invitation if you too busy. Indicate the reason and suggest another time for a meeting not to insult the host. Be punctual when visiting a meeting where few people are invited. Arriving 10 minutes late in such cases will be considered ultimately impolite. It is also inappropriate to arrive earlier as your host might still be preparing for your visit. On the other hand, it is OK to arrive late for a party, where your late arrival will not be noticed.
It is appropriate to bring a bottle of wine, a box of chocolate or a bouquet of flowers in case you are invited for dinner. One might ask what you do for living and you should not perceive this as an insult.
It is appropriate to call or send a short note to the host if you would like to thank him or her for hospitality.
