It is hardly possible to cover your educational expenses by getting a job in the US upon your arrival. It is also necessary to take into account that there are serious employment restrictions for foreign citizens and some types of visas prohibit any form of employment, limit it to 20 hours per week or allow on-campus work only.
F-1 visa does not allow off-campus employment during the first year of study. 20 hours per week of on-campus work is allowed provided that you do not displace a US resident. Full-time employment is allowed during vacations provided that you will be returning to school by the end of the vacation period. You will have to apply for a Social Security Number and complete the Employment Eligibility form (I-9).
Graduate students are allowed to work for an off-campus employer, provided that the latter has an educational affiliation with the school. The employment must be related to a student's specialty.
Recipients of F-1 visa may ask Immigration and Naturalization Service for permission to accept off-campus employment. Permission may be granted in case a student experiences economic problems conditioned by insuperable factors, such as unusual increase in tuition fees, loss of financial aid, unavailability of on-campus employment, major currency exchange rate fluctuations, unexpected medical expenses or financial changes in the student's primary source of support. Before addressing to the INS, a student must make sure he is in a good academic standing and is enrolled in a full-time educational program. The INS will need Certification by Designated School Official form (Form I-538), Application for Temporary Employment Authorization (Form I-765), student copy of form I-20 and filing fee. The employment authorization will be valid for one year.
Recipients of M-1 visa may not accept any form of employment, unless it is a temporary internship for practical training purposes.
Working on a tourist B-2 visa is subject to immediate deportation.
Temporary employment after the graduation is possible through obtainment of H-1B status, which is requested by your employer.
