The twentieth century was signed by the industrial revolution that brought a number of inventions, some of which were really practical and were made for the sake of humanity, whereas others seem quite entertaining, but unnecessary. In my opinion, useless inventions purely demonstrate the blossom of scientific and cultural progress, i.e. the context of innovation is really different, since useless inventions are done in the wake of creation.
As for me, the most unpractical invention is high fashion, because it has brought nothing but specific and peculiar entertainment for few people, whereas it makes almost no contributions to the fashion industry itself. As for me, it is possible to realize that there is a huge gap between the beautiful TV-trailers and nice images in stylish magazines, depicting models dressed weirdly and inconveniently, and the assortment of clothes in shops and boutiques, which usually offer less awkward outfit.
From another point of view, high fashion has become a type of art (I do agree with this statement), whereas it brings no esthetic pleasure like music and paintings do, since watching models walking monotonously from one side of podium to another is fairly boring. High fashion is to some extent a blend of consumer culture and postmodernist art, but the consensus between these dissimilar cultural aspects is of little vitality, because it does not reflect objective reality and is not adjusted to the American manner of clothing. As one knows, fashion industry produces trends of style and modernity for daily life as well as for ceremonial events, whereas the result of high-fashion designers is unaffordable and extremely eccentric for the majority and high fashion trends seem to be impossible to follow. Maybe I am a sanctimonious person, but high fashion defiles make me laugh and wonder how long this business will exist.
To sum up, the most unpractical, yet costly, invention is high fashion, because it contributes neither to the development of fine arts nor to the fashion industry, i.e. does not determine the trends of style.
