My worst nightmare, which becomes a reality from time to time is being imprisoned within a crowd of people, moving spontaneously in different directions. In such conditions, I usually start feeling as if I am standing in front a lofty and broad wall which I should climb or die. The only thought circling inside my mind is related to planning all possible ways to escape or get away from this grey and faceless mass. I treat the crowd itself as a huge hundred-handed monster with countless eyes and voices, demanding, instructing, quarrelling, discussing, chattering… I believe there is a logical explanation for a fear of crowds: an individual is afraid of dissolving within the mass and thus losing his/her personality. In addition, I always need some personal area, which is unavailable in crowds, because of unintentional tactile contacts between its 'members' (or victims).
Demonstrative aggression of others is also a source of stress, because I regard aggression as a direct physical or psychological danger, which produces a kind of cognitive dissonance in my consciousness. When someone starts shouting at me or making dull and pointless commandments, I usually reject and defend myself with either icily cold irony or avalanches of uncovered hostility.
The last, but not the least cause of stress is others' low reliability. I often get nervous or distressed when an allegedly trustworthy person does not keep his/her promises and puts me into tightened or extremely inconvenient conditions. In this case, there is a doubled disappointment: first, I become disillusioned with the person's reputation and second, I get additional problems to solve immediately and urgently. Consequently, I started relying primarily upon myself and taking others' 'guarantees' not so seriously.
As one might assume, the most stressful conditions are, in my opinion, large crowds, aggression directed to myself and the disillusionment in supposedly trustworthy people.
