Mythologization and conceptualization of the South began after the Civil was and in fact arose from the Northern politicians' long monologues about the 'lost paradise' and the 'good old South'. In addition, so-called Magnolia writers seemed to enjoy idealizing the prewar life on the South with its necessary attributes such as slavery and romantic work on cotton plantations. The consequent present-day myth about the South held by many Americans indicates that Southerners today wouldn't mind re-adopting slavery or at least removing colored people from the United States. As for me, the idea of Southern racial intolerance was literally 'taken from the ceiling': the dwellers of the South are ordinary Americans, who have already welcomed people from other countries to live and work in the United States, because national democracy cannot be partial and thus has spread across the whole country.
The second and the most crucial myth about the South was constructed by Margaret Mitchell in her book 'Gone With the Wind', in which she gives the detailed description of a true-born Southern woman: Scarlett O'Hara is presented as a morally strong, mercantile and quite manly woman, capable of winning the happiness for her family. Scarlett is in love with a truly romantic guy, who is shy, sensitive and idealistic, and who is generally seen as a gentile salvation for the South. In fact, Southern women are very different and few of them resemble the woman O'Hara. Southern men, in my opinion, are as masculine as average American, and Southern women do not constitute a separate 'female caste'. The South and the North today live in peace and harmony, so the assimilation between Southerners and Northerners is so great that it is impossible to draw an image of a typical South or North dweller, since the specifications of various parts of the country have been mixed into the unique and entire image of a true American.
The chief and the most ridiculous myths about the South are thus the intolerance of Southern people and the idea that southern women are self-interested just like Scarlett O'Hara.
