The question about the balance between financing sociocultural and military needs of the country is controversial, and I would like to outline two opposing viewpoints. From the first point of view, due to the current events in Iraq, our country should develop and increase its defense and military potential, because the initial goal and duty of each government is protecting people from external interventions and maintaining the entity of country borders. In this sense, military needs are temporarily being the most significant and demanding, since the successful ending of the war is possible only with strong financial support.
The opposite viewpoint is that educational, social and cultural needs are eternal, in spite of all military conflicts, because any society requires improvement and cultural evolution, especially with regard to such democratic country as the United States. Military sector has always constituted a large part of the U.S. budget, so it would be irrational to put societal development into a state of stagnation, hiding behind the large motto: 'We all are working for the victory!'. As for me, our current situation with the war on terrorism is not so catastrophic that budgets planned for social and educational progress are to be curbed.
As one might conclude, the United States is not a sole force fighting terrorists, because the war, as one knows, has got support from the European Union and the United Nations peacemakers, hence the U.S. government should not sacrifice the urgent requirements of American society for military advancement, as only strong society, where the majority of members have their needs satisfied, is in fact able to resist a common enemy.
