Some countries, such as the members of the European Union and the United states, prioritize sustainable economic development, but some others, like former Soviet Union put militarization and arming as their primary goal. In my opinion, the latter political direction is not exactly wise, so if I were a politician, I would concentrate on fighting poverty and other social problems rather than improving military forces. There are several reasons for my choice.
Firstly, poverty is a social problem, which indicates the government's incapability of realizing their responsibility for the lives and welfares of the population. Poverty is often a signal of need for the change of either president or parliament, and it might even lead to a civil war or revolution, i.e. to a 'public enforcement' of reformations. In addition, poverty weakens the country's reputation in a sense of the world political arena, which, in turn, might lead to a military intervention of foreign armies (or the UN, for instance).
Secondly, I believe that it is impossible to build a productive society and effective political regime in the conditions of poverty and unemployment. Even if the government is able to avoid the first two threats, employees, drained by poverty and despair, would probably refuse to continue working for military industry. Moreover, poverty is not a good stimulus of working activity -it would definitely worsen the employees' performance.
As one might assume, reduction of poverty is the main indicator of democratic society, which each its member is proud of. Consequently, each its member would be spiritually prepared to protect the society in case any military conflict occurs.
