In my opinion, there is a large gap between high school and college, because the main goal of high school studies is preparation to college, yet the main goal of college education is preparation to 'adult life' and acquirement of speciality. Due to those differences, there is a kind of dissimilarity between secondary school and college teachers.

School teachers are often interested in their students' successful school graduation, so they are ready to help lingering students with additional lessons.
On the contrary, college teachers force students to help themselves on their own and induce self-development. College tutors often leave some questions unexplained in order to make students learn to search for necessary information and study some questions on their own. Furthermore, college teachers, trying to prepare their student for career-making, encourage them to analyze additional professional issues and make their own creative works and projects.
To conclude, school metaphorically resembles logical continuation of family (and the atmosphere during lessons is quite similar), whereas college life is a logical beginning of one's career, so college teachers make students start their independent life with their creative and analytical projects and course works.
