For the last fifty years the United States have been experiencing the growth of popularity of baseball and football as 'national' sports. It might seem at first sight that spectator sports are overemphasized in the country, but I have a different opinion.
First of all, as I have already mentioned, baseball and football as the most popular spectator sports, are national brands. American nation has its unique culture, and spectator (and spectacular!) sports are its necessary attributes: in many American movies one might learn about famous sportspeople and their path their path to glory. In addition, spectator sports constitute a great part of American popular culture, because they have a non-trivial meaning. They have also symbolic meaning of American leisure, i.e. the way Americans like to spend weekends.
Secondly, the images of sportspeople are nowadays as popular and significant as those of Hollywood stars, which indicates the direct need for creation a general image of American spectator sports. Moreover, the national interest in beautiful athletic sportspeople is also growing: this canon of sportive beauty emerged from Ancient Greek Olympiads and Roman sport competitions and is probably an eternal canon of 'healthy spirit in healthy body'.
Thirdly, as one knows, contemporary Americans lead quite harmful lifestyles, including eating at fast foods, 'forgetting' about medical examinations and health checks and wearing 'unhealthy' (too tight or extremely baggy) clothes.
Spectacular sports thus are becoming an industry, which does not merely entertain people, but also teaches them how to become healthy, primarily showing the images of sportspeople, who give advice and recommendations and are themselves good examples to follow, so the existing concentration on them is reasonable and is associated with healthy lifestyle campaigns.
