From an immigrant student who explains why he came to the choice of education as future profession and what he wants to do to help his minority to better integrate into the dominant culture community
I am a UCLA graduate student, Asian American studies as my major and
Education as my minor. During my studies I was a three-time recipient
of the Provost' Honors List. My background is a working class family
from South Vietnam. I had to work when I was at high school to help my
parents to support the family. My aspiration is to study for Master of
Arts in SFSU to concentrate on equity and social justice in education.
I am interested in the field of education because it needs drastic reforms
in order to meet the needs of immigrant youth. I have done research on
current issues in ethics and gender diversity in education from the
theoretical, historical, and political perspectives. I want to continue
this research for which I was awarded a second prize, to focus on race,
class, and sexual orientation issues in education.
Vietnamese American families feel isolated in the host culture. We are
close to one another and, as Asian Americans, have psychological problems
in cultural adaptation and intergenerational issues. Our Vietnamese
immigrant youth, like me, tends to be independent. We are easier
assimilated than our parents. We are ambitious and goal-oriented but
it is hard for us to be under constant pressure of success that is a
traditional demand for us in families. I want to change attitudes and
beliefs in Vietnamese families concerning complicated educational issues.
For that, I pursue a Master's degree in Education to enroll in a Ph.D.
program to do research on multicultural education, specializing in the
field of Education and Ethical studies.
I am involved in voluntary work within the project "Vietnamese American
children: education is your future." I am responsible for arranging
extracurricular activities that help enrich children's Vietnamese identity
simultaneously integrating into the dominant culture, casting off
stereotypes and prejudices about differences. We have achieved excellent
results. Our project participants are doing well at high school. The
feeling of integrity with the community which is diverse is very rewarding.
This scholarship is meaningful to me as recognition of my efforts to build
the community educated to build a new world of equity and social justice.
