If online shopping trends from November and December
carry over to 2005, it promises to be a good year for e-commerce
business.
Shoppers say convenience,
variety and online bargains as the three top reasons they bought
online.
Consumers have become
accustomed to purchasing online over the years and look to the
Internet to find complete product information, competitive prices and easy delivery, allowing them to
have more time to spend with their families, and other leisure activities.
Some e-commerce
experts suggest
consumers have increased buying on the Internet because they have become more
familiar and trusting with their online buying options.
The eSpending Report from
Goldman Sachs, Harris Interactive and Nielsen//NetRatings showed sales in 2004
jumped to $23.2 billion, up $4.7 billon, from 2003. These numbers do not
include online
travel purchases.
Thirty-six percent of the
consumers surveyed said, avoiding crowds was the primary reason they purchased
online, while the same percentage said lower prices were the reason they chose
to shop on-line rather than at the Mall. Another 33 percent mentioned increased
product selection.
The survey also showed that 37
percent were "very satisfied" with shopping online, while 24 percent
were "somewhat satisfied." Thirty percent said their online
shopping experience
had improved significantly since 2003.
Clothing accounted for $3.8 billion, or 16% of
the total on-line sales. This was once again the most popular purchase. The
toy/video game market, much like in traditional stores, continues to be a big
seller accounting for $2.5 billion, or 11 percent of online revenue. The electronics category was third with $2.3 billion,
or 10 percent of total of online sales.
Jewelry made the biggest strides this season,
with sales on the Internet increasing 113 percent to $1.9 billion. In 2003, it
failed to reach the billion-dollar mark with total sales topping out at $888
million.
Another category that has
shown an increase in on-line purchases is discount bedroom
furniture, contemporary
bedroom furniture,
and discount dining
room furniture.
Smart shoppers are getting better values on-line then at the neighborhood discount
living room furniture store.
More and more smart buyers are shopping on
line for the best prices on everything you buy.
The Feeling among businessmen now is, if your not doing business on-line in 2005, your not doing
business.
