2.3. Analytical Essay
An analytical essay is useful when it is necessary to fully understand and be able to explain the nature of the object (event, article, concept or theory). There is a number f viewpoints, from which the issue can be analyzed (Freudian perspective, comparative analysis, hermeneutics and so forth), and depending upon the area to which the object belongs, the writer can choose the most appropriate perspective.
There are also several general guidelines for writing an analytical paper. First of all, it is important to divide the object into parts and examine each of them (for instance, when dealing with a piece of art, the writer might analyze each detail separately). Furthermore, the author is logically supposed to look at the correspondence between the parts (proportion, harmony, presence or absence of internal conflict), i.e. the object should be analyzed "in general". Thirdly, the writer should consider the historical context of the object (when dealing with the art of the past epochs, the examination of the so-called "social ambience" is mandatory). Finally, it is highly recommended to decode (or at least make an attempt) the message, which the creator of the object tried to convey.
